History

The centerpiece of this historical building is the bar, which was built in England in the 1700’s.  The bar was disassembled and shipped across the Atlantic to find its home at Grand Central Station in NYC.  Finally, in 1920 it found its permanent residence here in Savannah Ga @ 9 Drayton.
The building was originally constructed for George W. Anderson in 1853 & has a rich and hauntingly historical past of its own!!!  One of the most famous ghostly encounters is the story of “The Hanged Man”, known as Bad Brute Bailey.  Bailey, a visiting Britain, challenged native Savannah Irishman Jack O’Dwyer in a bare-knuckle fight that went way wrong.  O’Dwyer was brutally bludgeoned to death as Bailey shouted his victory.  The Georgian spectators of the fight furiously executed Bailey on this VERY SITE!!  He was hanged in the back room of the old pub & was then quickly buried in the cellar.  Many years later, a body was excavated sharing the same description of Bad “Brute” Bailey.

“Some of the tavern regulars said that the  sounds of a man’s cries can sometimes be heard from the cellar…… that the shadowy figure of a hanged man has been seen swinging to and fro late at night in the back room.”
